January 2008 Askew School Awards Ceremony

On February 15, 2008, the Askew School held their annual awards ceremony. A number of faculty, alumni, students and their families attended this spectacular event. The annual Askew Awards Ceremony was held at the University Center 's Miller Hall. We began the evening with the judging of the Natasha Trogen Poster Competition. Many students and guests walked around the room viewing each poster, all wondering who would take home the prestigious award. The poster competitors included: Cheon Geun Choi , Kai-Jo Fu , Carl J. Gabrini , Karen Jumonville , Se Jin Lee , Youngmi Lee , Bruce McDonald , Sang-Chul Park , and Na Yong Ryoo . Dr. Keon-Hyung Lee, Dr. Robert Eger, and Dr. Earle Klay judged the poster competition. The Natasha Trogen Award went to Na Yong Ryoo .

Dr. Frances Berry opened up the ceremony with a couple of remarks about the Askew School , faculty and students.

Professor Kaifeng Yang presented the Malcolm Parsons Award (MPA Best Paper) to Jessica Terman . The title of her essay was “Modern War and Unconstitutional Declarations”.

Professor Ralph Brower presented the Raul DeGuzman Award (Ph.D. Best Paper) to two students, Nathan Francis and Max Mendiata . Nathan Francis' paper was titled, “Public Spaces as Communicative Spaces: How Undergraduate Students Perceptions of Public Spaces on FSU's Campus Contribute to Their Utilization of These Spaces” and Maximiliano Mendieta's paper was titled “The Dying Experience at Home and Hospice Care: A Cast of Nurses, Family Members and the Patient”. The honorable mentions were Claire Knox's, “Power in Organizations: Views from a Postmodern and Critical Theory Perspective” and Se Jin Lee's, “What Factors Influence the adoption of Collaborative Governance Institution? A case of EPA-States Performance Partnership Agreements”.

The Pi Alpha Alpha inductees were announced by Professor Kaifeng Yang. Pi Alpha Alpha is a Public Administration National Honor Society for individuals who exemplify outstanding academic achievement. The inductees of this prestigious honor were Dr. Frances S. Berry, Kristin Brown, Corina Chiorescu, Cheon G. Choi, Dexter Dickey, Cecilia Galvan, Jennifer Gavrich, Ricky Harrison, Brian Jones, Youngmi Lee, Se Jin Lee, Agustin P. Leon-Moreta, Eul Ki Lim, Shelley Linton, Sang Chul Park, Na Yong Ryoo, Rosa Pena-Scheker, Karen Samuel, Sonide Simon, Christy D. Smith, Sarah Smith, Michael Stripling , and Mary E. Wilson .

Frances Cox, the daughter of Ruth “Sweetie” Cox, presented the Ruth “Sweetie” Cox Scholarship to the Ph.D. Candidate, Will Hsieh . Frances Cox spoke some very heart warming words about her mother.

Dr Frances Berry presented the Service to the Askew School Award to Dr. Earle Klay , for all of his contributions to the faculty and students.

The Outstanding Teacher Award went to Dr. Neil Crispo who generously inspire and motivate students to succeed in all their endeavors.

In closing, Dr. Berry thanked everyone for coming to this wonderful event to help celebrate the achievements of the students.
